What can you get for a box of Space Marines?

Recently I expressed my surprise at the cost of some recent GW 40K Space Marine miniatures. I also, back in 2011, suggested using the GW as a universal form of cross-game currency comparison.

But after some consideration I thought that it would be fun to see just what exactly you could get for some other game systems for the same price as that single box of Space Marine Centurion figures. Please note: your results will vary. Games Workshop has some bizarre world-wide pricing that makes it difficult to compare prices from country to country. The same Centurion box that is $94 in Canada is £45 is the UK which converts directly to $77 Cnd. All this is then is what one Canadian gamer could get for the same cost as a Space Marine Centurion boxed set. (more…)

pNemo revisited

So I did a bit more thinking about the pNemo list and decided to tweak it a bit

Commander Adept Nemo (6pts)

  • Lancer (6pts)
  • Avenger (9pts)
  • Squire (2pts)

Long Gunner Infantry (Leader and 5 Grunts) (6pts)

  • Long Gunner Infantry Officer & Standard (2pts)

Stormblade Infantry (Leader and 5 Grunts) (5pts)

  • Stormblade Infantry Officer & Standard (3pts)
  • 3 Stormblade Infantry Storm Gunner (3pts)

Captain Arlan Strangewayes (2pts)
Journeyman Warcaster (3pts)

I dropped the Storm Tower and added the UA for the Long Gunners. This also allowed me to add a third Storm Gunner to the list.

As I haven’t really played Nemo or the Stormblades before I figured that it might be better to limit the new models in the list to a minimum and learn to properly use the ones I have. It also strikes me that the Storm Tower is a bit tricky to use effectively so it might be better saved for a list where I can focus on it,

pNemo list

Thursday is coming soon so I need a new pNemo list to try out. This is largely similar to the one I used last week with some minor substitutions.

Commander Adept Nemo

  • Lancer (6pts)
  • Avenger (9pts)
  • Squire (2pts)

Long Gunner Infantry (Leader and 5 Grunts) (6pts)
Storm Tower (2pts)
Stormblade Infantry (Leader and 5 Grunts) (5pts)

  • Stormblade Infantry Officer & Standard (3pts)
  • 3 Stormblade Infantry Storm Gunner (3pts)

Captain Arlan Strangewayes (2pts)
Journeyman Warcaster (3pts)

As is typical with me, I have added a Jack simply because it looks neat and I want to try it out. This is the primary reason why a) I don’t win as much as I could and b) I will never be a tournament player :-)

Open for debate is whether the Storm Gunners are more useful than the UA for the Long Gunners. If I trim the Storm Gunners back to a single model I can afford the UA which might make the Long Gunners more effective.

War Room

I have been spending a bit of time using the War Room application. It is Privateer Press’ tablet and mobile application for building armies, reading cards and also for tracking damage in games. It actually works rather well but there are a few issues with the application

Update

So it has been some time since an update so I am going to crunch a month’s worth of info into a single post. What it lacks in depth I hope it makes up for in… well something.

Warmachine
The game that I am playing most is still Warmachine. I have to qualify that somewhat as between summer vacations and a flood raging through the city I probably didn’t play for a month and a half. I did get in game this Thursday against a very nicely painted white and purple Cryx force that took out pNemo in a few turns. My mistake mostly as I left Nemo open and forgot that Mortenbra had the Overrun spell on a Chicken Jack that let it move, just barely, into charge range. Lesson learned.

A shocking and horrible occurrence

I took my nascent Cygnar force to Sentry Box today to play Warmachine with some of the gamers from the local COGs Warmachine club. I took a variant of my Caine list from the other night except that I swapped out the Sword Knights for some Storm Blades and the Centurion for a Charger.

I played one of the local gamers, Josh I think, who had a Khador force using the Old Witch, a unit of Winter Guard, Widow Makers, Yuri, Kovnick Joe and the Bears.

List for tonight’s game

Rob and I will be heading out to Myth tonight for a 35pt game of Warmachine. I have no idea what he is bringing and my list is limited to what I have on hand. I’ve never really played Caine before so I will give him a try. I’m also bringing out Sword Knights as, again, I’ve never used them before as well.

Miniature gaming

As many of you might be aware, I made a decision some time ago to forego miniature gaming due to the onset of my arthritis. I clean out almost every single miniature in the house as well as my paints, terrain and hobby supplies. After that I focused on getting involved in board games, wargames like ASL and some of FFG’s Living Card Game range.

Ultimately this appears to have left me quite unhappy. While I enjoy board games and LCGs it seems that these didn’t really give me the sort of experience that games like Warmachine, Hordes, Malifaux or others do. This has left me in a bit of a conundrum.

What I don’t play and why

Looking through my blog there are a few games that I have posted about that I no longer play. So I thought I would look at each game and discuss why I have moved on from them.

Malifaux
There is not a thing I really dislike about Malifaux. I love the setting, the card system is incredible and the game itself and the scenario structure lead to some really exciting and unique games. Sadly aside from one local player I couldn’t get in any regular games. I really just want to game now and not build a community for a game and so despite wanting to play it more Malifuax was sidelined due to lack of local interest. This is a clear example of why smaller companies spend so much time, or should, trying to build up local demo teams and getting gamers interested. A local community of players can make or break a game and in this instance the lack of a larger community made me move on.

If you know people locally that play Malifaux then you should check it out as it is easily the best tabletop miniature game developed in the last decade. Seriously. If you can play it do so. You won’t regret it.

Warmachine
Again I love the Warmachine game but there were two factors here. I really don’t like the Colossals and the war engines. I think it moves the game into a direction that detracts from the skirmish nature of the game and is, I think, the precursor to a larger scale game. I also just don’t like the Menoth models for both of the large engines/Jacks. And I really only have time for a single core game and it with the re-introduction of Epic: Armageddon to my life Warmachine really didn’t have any chance. I like Warmachine but I have never, AFAIK, been as involved or obsessed with the game as some people have and so it isn’t really difficult to have my time for the Warmachine drift into a different game.

More Menoth Jacks

Michelle was busy rewatching the first episode of the BBC Sherlock Holmes series and so I had some time to head downstairs and assemble the Menoth Templar and Scourge of Heresy Warjacks.

One side-effect of the Warmachine Two Player starter is that there are a lot of Menoth Heavy Jack chassis available and I currently have four of them in addition to the Crusader and Vanquisher that I picked up from my original Two Player starter purchase. One of the two remaining chassis will be used to make another Crusader and I will hold on to the last one as I currently don’t have any need for another Heavy Warjack. Who knows, maybe Privateer Press will release another Character Jack or a variant kit to use the Heavy Warjack chassis?
