IHMN game report: Institut v. Ronin

I met up with Danny at Sentry Box to play a game of In Her Majesty’s Name. I had my Institut pour la recherche et l’exploitation des technologies inconnues and Daniel had his Ronin company. This was Daniel’s first game and my second. It was my first game with a fuller set of figures on the table and I also had slightly better understanding of the rules.

Daniel had his seven strong team of Ronin which consisted of four Ronin, Zen archer, Wandering Monk and Ronin leader. His force was very much focused on close combat while mine was more focused on shooting and gadgets.

Turn 1

We played the Breakthrough scenario and we arranged the terrain so that I would have to move and not just sit back and shoot his Ronin for a few turns. One thing about having a set of Martial Artists is that they are wickedly fast and so Daniel was actually able to get into close combat a lot quicker than I thought. After turn 2 we were in the thick of it and my lack of FV focused.

Turn 3

Daniel had his Monk use the Water Bullets ability and it worked quite well. I tried to pick targets that I could damage easier but I didn’t have any luck and then his Ronin were on me before I could get more chances to fire.

I was the attacker in this scenario so I was ultimately going to try to push off to Daniel’s table-edge. I sent two Chaussers to attempt to try to do that and they were chased across the table by Daniel’s Leader and another Ronin. Daniel and I both had an opportunity to use our Medics and there were a lot more rule and talent interactions in this game than my previous one. Most likely because I remembered the Talents my characters had :-)

Things went well until they didn’t.

Gaston disengaged from his opponent to attack the Zen Archer on top of the hill. He took the archer out but Daniel brought in his Wandering Monk (with Medic) and a Ronin and the Monk was able to survive combat to provide assistance but the Archer failed his pluck roll. Gaston then quickly went down (rolling a 1 for Pluck) and Helene, my Medic, went to his rescue but was too far away to help. Gaston passed on, his clockwork mechanisms smashed by the Monk’s Quarterstaff, and then Helene went down to the Monk also rolling a 1 for Pluck.

Gaston down

My only hope was the two Chaussers that were making a break for the table edge. Sadly Daniel cut one of them down and then the Ronin and Leader ganged up on the second one who quickly fell to their swords.

This was quite a fun game. Much more interesting than our first attempt at the rules and an interesting game in general. It was also great to meet up with Daniel and he turned out to be a fun opponent. His force was quite well crafted and very thematic which made it fun to play against.

I have some ideas for how to tweak my force but I was actually quite happy with how it played and looking forward to putting some paint of the figures.

Had a great time, thanks for the game.

    Cheers,

    1. Thanks for coming down. We’ll have to do it again soon

  2. An excellent battle report with two interesting companies.
I think Daniel will be especially interested in the next supplement as it includes a company of traditionalist Samurai called the 1001 Ronin. There’s also yakuza and ninja companies.
    Cheers,

    1. It was a fun game and it definitely went better than our first outing with the rules. The game also had some interesting swings that made it a lot of fun to play.
