What can you get for a box of Space Marines?

Recently I expressed my surprise at the cost of some recent GW 40K Space Marine miniatures. I also, back in 2011, suggested using the GW as a universal form of cross-game currency comparison.

But after some consideration I thought that it would be fun to see just what exactly you could get for some other game systems for the same price as that single box of Space Marine Centurion figures. Please note: your results will vary. Games Workshop has some bizarre world-wide pricing that makes it difficult to compare prices from country to country. The same Centurion box that is $94 in Canada is £45 is the UK which converts directly to $77 Cnd. All this is then is what one Canadian gamer could get for the same cost as a Space Marine Centurion boxed set. (more…)

What I don’t play and why

Looking through my blog there are a few games that I have posted about that I no longer play. So I thought I would look at each game and discuss why I have moved on from them.

Malifaux
There is not a thing I really dislike about Malifaux. I love the setting, the card system is incredible and the game itself and the scenario structure lead to some really exciting and unique games. Sadly aside from one local player I couldn’t get in any regular games. I really just want to game now and not build a community for a game and so despite wanting to play it more Malifuax was sidelined due to lack of local interest. This is a clear example of why smaller companies spend so much time, or should, trying to build up local demo teams and getting gamers interested. A local community of players can make or break a game and in this instance the lack of a larger community made me move on.

If you know people locally that play Malifaux then you should check it out as it is easily the best tabletop miniature game developed in the last decade. Seriously. If you can play it do so. You won’t regret it.

Warmachine
Again I love the Warmachine game but there were two factors here. I really don’t like the Colossals and the war engines. I think it moves the game into a direction that detracts from the skirmish nature of the game and is, I think, the precursor to a larger scale game. I also just don’t like the Menoth models for both of the large engines/Jacks. And I really only have time for a single core game and it with the re-introduction of Epic: Armageddon to my life Warmachine really didn’t have any chance. I like Warmachine but I have never, AFAIK, been as involved or obsessed with the game as some people have and so it isn’t really difficult to have my time for the Warmachine drift into a different game.

Warmachine

Today was the second time that I was possessed by an urge to start putting together another force for Warmachine. The Two-player starter set is really calling to me.

Oddly enough the entire thing seems to last me a few hours and then I “come to my senses” and go back to planning new Blood Bowl and Malifaux forces.

I was actually at the point of planning my purchases today (Two-player Starter, Forces of Menoth Choir and tokens) until I had this great idea for a Chaos Blood Bowl team (Norse players as Beastmen and Bloodletters or Daemonettes as Chaos Warriors) and it was the realization that I could get that team for slightly more than half the price of the Two-player starter that snapped me back to reality.

I wonder if I will be able to resist the next time?

Malifaux order arrives

My GenCon order from Wyrd Miniatures came in this morning. Excellent timing as I have a few hours to burn this afternoon and the Twisting Fates book will be a great way to do it.

All is not perfect though as there was a mispack in my order and the Nightmare Dead Justice set I ordered was replaced by a Nightmare Teddy figure. I’ve emailed them to sort the issue out.

All the rest of the figures arrived though so I have the Alt and Avatar Sonia Criid figures, the Alt Rasputina and the Miss Demeanour figures all ready to assemble and paint. I will be stopping work on my current Rasputina figure as I think that the new alternative sculpt is a lot more interesting and also more menacing than the original figure.

Painting the Ortegas

With the impending deadline of our Saturday Skirmish demo approaching I have begun to paint my Ortega starter for Malifaux. I did the skin yesterday and will start on the clothing tonight. I am also painting Abuela since she is not only a fun mini to paint but also a great addition to the crew.

Thankfully the new WN 7 brushes I picked up are great for doing highlights. The Ortegas as very human-like in scale and their hands and faces are quite small making it necessary to have a good brush with an exact point.

I will be doing all of their jackets the exact same to give them a consistent look but will make sure that there is enough variation of clothing colour to make them look interesting.

Malifaux Rasputina tournament list

Saturday is the Malifaux tournament at Myth-a-con 2 and I will be bringing a 35 SS Rasputina force to the event.

Rasputina — 4 Cache
Essence of Power [2ss]

Ice Gamin [4ss]
Ice Gamin [4ss]
Ice Gamin [4ss]
Ice Golem [9ss]
Silent One [6ss]
Convict Gunslinger [6ss]

I like the core Rasputina force and the Convict Gunslinger is put in the list to add a little more firepower.

The main strategy is going to be to use the Ice Pillars to control the board and then use the Ice Gamin to get into position and explode next to enemy units via some spells from Rasputina or the Silent One.

Nothing subtle but I hope that it works.

Busy gaming schedule

Well busy for me that is. This weekend is the Malifaux tournament at MythCon 2. I don’t suspect that there will be a lot of people competing at it but it will be a fun evening in any case and I should be able to get in three or four games of Malifaux.

The week after will be the regular Thursday night Warhammer night at Myth. I am hoping to have at least one Great Eagle to put into my army by then but I am not optimistic about getting one.

I am going to bring out my Phoenix Guard for the next game. I’ve had two games in a row now where I could have used their 4+ Ward Save to help fight against something big and nasty. They are, aside from the Dragon Princes, the hardiest of the High Ef troops and a good candidate to help take out the monsters that pop up quite frequently in the game.

Following that is the Skirmish Demo Day at Myth Games where there will be Malifaux demos aplenty (one hopes).

Building Undead and demo armies

With the recent arrival of my order from Mantic Games I have been busy assembling figures for my Undead/Vampire Counts army.

So far I have built:
9 x Zombies
20 x Revenants
20 x Skeleton Warriors
18 x Ghouls
5 x Wraiths
1 x GW Necromancer
1 x GW Banshee
3 x GW Vampire characters

I had plans to start building more Zombies and then some Revenants Knights but we now have plans to run two days of demos at the end of September and I have to paint up some figures for Malifaux and Dystopian War demos. Work has begun on the Prussian and FSA fleets and then I need to finish off one or more Malifaux crews.

Malifaux: Nicodem v Rasputina

Brett and I met at Myth Games on Saturday, last week, for a game of Malifaux. It was a chance for me to finally get my new Rasputina crew on the table and have a game.

I was playing a pretty standard Rasputina list

Rasputina — 4 Cache
Essence of Power [2ss]

  • Ice Golem [9ss]
  • Ice Gamin [4ss]
  • Ice Gamin [4ss]
  • Ice Gamin [4ss]
  • Silent One [6ss]
  • December Acolyte [6ss]

Deliveries ahoy

So today was a bit of a bonus day in terms of deliveries. I got the first of two Malifaux orders from Wyrd Miniatures and a set of replacement Bombards for my Kingdom of Britannia land forces. The original boxed set was without the bombards and so the army has been incomplete.

The Malifaux order consisted of a huge number of v2 cards, some additional Gremlins, a huge number of Undead models for Nicodem to summon and a few additional Guild miniatures. The majority of the order was to pick up the various Undead figures that I need for my Resurectionists.

The arrival of the KoB Bombards was the final impetus I needed to assemble my FSA armored forces so I can use them in a demo. Next up is the painting.
