The joy of being tabled

Kevin and I made the trek to Sentry Box yesterday to get in my inaugural game with my 40K Orks. Happily Kevin decided to play his Blood Angels army so I got a taste of what a BA assault force can do. Apparently it beats the hell out of you :-)

We played Annihilation with the Dawn of War deployment. I deployed first with the Deff Dread and a unit of Boyz on foot. Kevin didn’t deploy at all and came on board with all of his troops. My first big mistake was to follow Kevin’s movement and move my troops into the same table half as he did. I should have starting coming in from the opposite table corner to make him move as much as possible since he had very little shooting. My section of the table was a parking lot and Kevin had a lot more room to move than I did.

My Lootas were a bit disappointing. I only got a single round of fire with them and they rolled a pathetic 1 shot with their Deffguns. Placement was key here. I could have put them almost everywhere and given them more rounds of shooting. The range on the guns can cover the table from anywhere so there was no need to put them as close to Kevin’s troops as they did.

As you can expect from a first game I forgot a lot of things. I failed to remember to use my Boss Poles and could have stopped two of my units from fleeing. I also think that I failed to remember the armour plates on the Battlewagon but given that it was destroyed by a unit with a Powerfist and a Meltagun I suspect that it wasn’t going to have an impact.

In the end I think I really picked the wrong army to take Kevin on. I didn’t really have a lot of units that could deal with his 3+ armour saves and Kevin also had an uncanny knack of not failing a FNP save with his main assault troops.

Despite getting seriously pants by Kevin it was a fun game and I have some ideas for what to do to make the army better at killing Marines and also some idea of better ways to make use of the units that I did put on the table. Making an “all comers” army with the Orks seems to be a bit difficult and I think I need to focus on building lists to deal with specific opponents while I gain some more experience with the game and the Ork army.
